One · The dansiki

Lagos, and a loose-fitting shirt.


I grew up in Lagos, Nigeria, wearing a dansiki — the loose, embroidered top that meant freedom and ease in equal measure.

The word stayed with me. Decades later, when it came time to name the photography studio I was building in the San Francisco Bay Area, no other name was even in the running.

Dansiki, to a young man in Lagos, meant freedom of movement. It meant being unencumbered. It meant that the most beautiful clothing didn't have to be the most elaborate clothing; sometimes a single, well-made shirt did the job better than anything the world had to offer.

That's what dpcLens tries to be. Photography that does its job without overdoing it. Restraint as a kind of confidence. Quiet power. Freedom, minimalism, the things that mattered to a young man wearing his favorite top in Lagos in the 70s.

Two · The pivot

The wedding years.


Before there was dpcLens, there were weddings. A lot of them, across many years — some in California, some right here in Baltimore — and across the full range of light and emotion the work demanded.

I learned what most photographers spend a lifetime trying to learn. How to read a room in seconds. How to wait for the moment that mattered without forcing it. How to put strangers at ease in front of a camera — which is harder than any technical skill in the medium.

Architecture doesn't tell you when to release the shutter the way a bride walking down an aisle does. Houses don't smile, don't cry, don't catch the light at exactly the moment you'd hoped. But they hold mood and memory just as carefully if you know what to look for. The light pouring through a kitchen window at 9 AM has its own emotional cadence. A staircase at twilight carries a story.

dpcLens is what happens when years of reading people gets pointed at reading buildings. The instincts are the same. The patience is the same. The discipline of waiting for the right moment — and recognizing it when it arrives — is the same.

Three · The city

Why Baltimore.


Baltimore is unlike any other American real estate market — and that's why I'm here now.

After a long chapter in California, this is where dpcLens is putting down roots. There were reasons of family and reasons of light, and the two reasons turned out to be the same reason.

The rowhomes of Federal Hill, with their original 1920s leaded glass facing the harbor. The waterfront condos of Canton, catching morning light off the water in a way no inland property can. The Federal-era townhomes of Mount Vernon. The lush estates of Roland Park and Guilford, with their century-old oaks framing every elevation.

Five distinct architectural vocabularies inside a single city. Each one rewards a photographer willing to learn its specific light — when the brick reads warmest, where the harbor reflection hits the bay windows, what time of year the Roland Park canopy is at its most photogenic. The work is never finished, because the city keeps teaching.

dpcLens exists to make those properties seen. By the agents marketing them, and by the buyers who will eventually call them home.
